National nature reserve
Broumovské walls cover many magical places worth visiting in each season of the year. They rise in a south-western direction from the valley of the river Stěnava. From the landscape point of view they are a significant asymetrical ridge, from which arise various sandstone formations surrounding numerous ravines. Several ravines are ridged by a rock massif usually from west toeast. The most famous ravine is Kovářova ravine, through which a well marked tourist path from Police nad Metují to Broumov through Hvězda leads. Numerous mushroom rocks in the Slavný and Božanovský Špičák areas are perfect examples of the so called selective sandstone weathering.
The most interesting parts of the Broumovské walls are accesible by a dense net of marked tourists pathways, which enable a relatively comfortable tour through normally difficultly penetrable terrain. An important crossroads of the tourist pathways is Hvězda.
Hvězda, a baroque chapel from 18th century and a cottage from 19th century built in a Swiss style (with a restaurant in today), are also one of the most usual targets of the visitors of the Walls. It offers a splendid vista of the Broumovská valley and surrounding Czech and Polish mountains.
Other great view-points (for example Božanovský Špičák, Koruna, Supí hnízdo) offer views not only of surrounding terrains and proximity of Policko and Broumovsko regions, but also of the characteristic ridges of the Krkonoš mountains, Orlické or Bystřicské mountains and through Poland all the way to Kralický Sněžník and Jeseníky. The south-eastern part of the Walls is easily accesible from Machov or Božanov- the Božanovský Špičák area (773m above sea level, highest peak of the Walls) with marked circuit, Junácká viewpoint and Bludiště. An interesting formation is also the sandstone Kamenná brána (stone gate) and a near peak Koruna (769m above sea level), which offers a beautiful view inthe direction of Poland.
Broumovské walls are accesible not only to pedestrian tourists but also to cyclists (mountain and tracking bikes). Several kilometers of cyclopaths are marked within the reservation.
