The Baroque Bischofstein Chateau is located on the outskirts of the village of Skály, in a forest near Teplice nad Metují. It is surrounded by sandstone cliffs with a number of climbing routes, as well as a picturesque lagoon and the ruins of a Gothic castle formerly known as Katzenstein, now Skály.
The chateau is an interesting two-storey rectangular building with a mansard roof. An exterior double flight of stairs with an arcade supported by Tuscan columns leads to the upper floor. Opposite the chateau is a classical-style office building dating from 1841 called the New Chateau, probably the result of the conversion of a farm building.
The original fortress with its farmyard was built after 1582 by the Čertorejs of Čertorej. The entire Skály estate was acquired in the mid-16th century by Bernard Žehušický of Nestajov, who began to build a farmstead in the lower castle area, work that was continued by his successor, Jan Žehušický of Nestajov. In 1576, when his brother Hertvík sold Skály to the Bohdanecký brothers from Hodkov, there was already talk of a residence that had recently been built. After 1580, the building changed hands a number of times, but in 1622 it was bought by the first Bishop of Hradec Králové, Matyáš Ferdinand Sobek of Bílenberk, to serve as the basis for the newly founded Hradec Králové chapter. In 1666, under Bishop Sobek of Bílenberk, the fortress was converted to a chateau. It was used as a summer residence by the bishop and the canons of Hradec Králové. An arched staircase supported by eight stone Tuscan columns was built in front of the longitudinal façade and small tower was erected.
In 1825, the chateau was rebuilt in the Empire style, and in 1841 the Hradec Králové Chapter had a new classicist building constructed in the north-western part of the Skály courtyard - opposite the old chateau - to be used for the administration of the court, as the older chateau was no longer suitable as it was. A plaque above the main entrance describes it as an official building (Amtsgebaude), but it was commonly referred to as the 'New Chateau. Both buildings belonged to the Hradec Králové Chapter until 1948, when they were transferred to the state together with the courtyard during the second land reform.
The state farm did not do a very good job of taking care of the buildings on the site, so in 1974 the entire site was transferred to what was then the national enterprise Stavební geologie Praha. The dilapidated outbuildings were demolished and the "chateau" buildings themselves were repaired and made ready for their new use - as a company recreation centre. The whole of the grounds were then landscaped. The reconstruction work, which largely restored the former appearance of the entire site, was completed in 1981. Since 1989, the complex has been used as a guesthouse with a restaurant located in the Baroque chateau and open to the general public.
