History of the monastery
The monastery was founded in the 13th century after Ottokar I of Bohemia donated the local estate to the monks of the Order of St. Benedict. In the 17th century, the monastery was rebuilt in its present Baroque form by Italian master builder Martin Allio of Lowenthal, designed by the architects Christopher Dientzenhofer and his son Kilian Ignaz. The latter also designed the monastery’s interior décor, which was painted by some outstanding artists of the Prague Baroque - stucco master Bernard Spinetti, fresco artist Jan Karel Kovář and painter Felix A. Scheffler. The interiors of the abbey and convent were decorated with paintings by Petr Brandl, among others. The altarpieces in the chapels at the side of the church were painted by V. V. Reiner.
A unique copy of the Shroud of Turin
In 1999, a unique copy of the Turin Shroud from 1651 was found in the monastery Church of St. Adalbert. There are about 40 similar historical copies around the world, but the Broumov copy is the only one in Central Europe (north of the Alps) and is said to be the most beautiful. In 2014, the monastery and the monastery garden underwent extensive refurbishment, which saw the Broumov Monastery Educational and Cultural Centre opened up in the new premises. The revitalised monastery garden is open to visitors free of charge, every day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The monastery is open all year round, and a visit makes for an unforgettable experience.
