The original church in Božanov is mentioned in the oldest sources as early as the 14th century and was dedicated to St. Bartholomew. The construction of the new church of St. Mary Magdalene began in 1709, probably according to the design of Kryštof Dientzenhofer. It is not possible to know how far the construction of the church was carried out and when it was interrupted, as the building accounts from the following years have not been preserved. It is assumed that the construction of the east tower and the presbytery began, and the old church continued to be used until 1735.
The second phase of construction, already carried out according to a new design by Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer, was started in 1733 after a long pause, and the church was completed in 1743. The Church of St. Mary Magdalene stands in the middle of the village near the intersection of two historic roads, in a dominant position on an elevation in the middle of a cemetery surrounded by a stone wall. The nave of the church is based on a square plan with truncated corners. The transverse oval spaces of the chancel and chancel are connected to the main axis. The neo-Baroque main altar dates from the beginning of the 20th century. In the middle of the altar retable is a statue of St. Mary Magdalene, the patroness of the church, on the sides are statues of St. Joseph and St. John the Baptist. The church has been restored in recent years as part of the architectural heritage conservation programme approved in 1997.
