Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Vernéřovice
The parish church of St. Michael the Archangel is a dominant feature of the village of Vernéřovice. It stands on a hill in the middle of the village on the site of the original wooden church. It was built in 1540 by Abbot Matthias and enlarged at the end of the 17th century by the decision of Abbot Thomas Sartorius. The present Baroque church was built in 1719-20 or 1722, when the interior was being completed, perhaps according to a plan by Christoph Dientzenhofer.
His authorship is not directly documented in the sources, but we can infer it from his building work for Abbot Otmar Zinke. In the case of the Vernéřovice church, it is a single-nave oval building with a sacristy on the eastern side and a tower on the western side. Originally the church had a total of five bells, but most of them were vandalised during the First World War. In 1924, two bells were newly acquired by the bell-making workshop of Octav Winter in Broumov. However, these bells were also confiscated during the Second World War and only one bell from the 17th century has remained here to this day. Above the main entrance there is a marble plaque with an inscription which translates as "To the Prince of the Heavenly Hosts, St. Michael, donated by Otmar, Abbot of Břevnov 1719." The main altarpiece is the work of Felix Antonín Scheffler and depicts the apparition of St. Michael the Archangel on Mount Gargano. Near the church there is a Baroque rectory with the emblem of the Břevnov-Broumov Abbey above the entrance, which now houses the municipal office.
