House Gallery in Broumov

The House Gallery is located in the middle of the monastery garden in Broumov, founded in the late 17th century by Abbot Thomas Sartorius. The gallery building itself was construction in the 18th century and rebuilt in the early 19th century. Originally, it was a single-storey building with a shingle mansard roof. The second floor was added in 1910.

The House Gallery has long been dedicated to presenting painting and sculpture in their contemporary specific forms. Alongside iconic figures of the late 20th-century Czech art scene, it also includes important proponents of the middle generation of artists, as well as talented recent art school graduates. It often highlights creative principles that are not primarily based on the fleeting social appeal of specific external themes, but pursue the inspirational nature of a more general space.

As outdoor exhibitions can be held in the monastery garden, the exhibition concept also includes site-specific works reflecting the strong ambience around the Baroque monastery.

The House Gallery curator’s exhibition concept also places emphasis on ensuring the continuity of its programme, which it sees as an independent cultural asset for the Broumov region and the town itself. Since it was first opened, the gallery has offered the professional community and the general public in the region the opportunity to enjoy the works of numerous prominent artists. Although fairly small, the space hosts professionally presented exhibitions with all the accompanying leaflets and brochures, in a quality to rival that of professional state-run institutions.
