The original Baroque two-storey timbered building with its shingled mansard roof was constructed in 1785 to replace the wooden school dating from 1705, which was no longer adequate. Children were taught at the school until 1857.
There were two classrooms on the ground floor, with the teachers' apartments upstairs. There was a carpentry workshop on the ground floor of the former school in around 1900. The interiors are no longer original, having been renovated in the 1990s (new floors, stove, sanitary facilities). The original wooden staircase in the entrance hall has been preserved.
Nowadays, you can find reconstructions of two school classrooms on the ground floor and a replica of an early 20th-century apartment on the first floor. Passing through the former black kitchen, visitors can see the garden behind the school, containing, for example, the original latrines. The exhibition presenting life in the Old School was created by the Náchod Museum in cooperation with the Handmaids' Guild. The exhibition does not show the school at the time when it was actually used for teaching (1785-1856), but at a later time. The smaller classroom exhibits some historical all-wooden school desks from Pěkov and Dolní Vernéřovice. The new large school classroom is reminiscent of the 1930s; the furnishings are from the former school in Dolní Vernéřovice and were donated by the Jívka municipal authority.
The apartment on the first floor contains furniture that comes mainly from the collections of the Náchod Museum. Visitors may be interested to see the complete bedroom from the Fajt household from Police nad Metují, as well as an old fridge from Hejtmánkovice. The crockery, clothes, linen and other equipment on display are from the collections of Mrs Št'ovíčková, Mrs Hejnová or were donated by various benefactors.
