And what should you really not miss? A unique sandstone rock known as Slavenské hřiby. The Baroque Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows at Hvězda. The deep and mysterious Smith's Gorge. The Slaven viewpoint, exposed to the elements, where’ll feel the thrill of a soaring bird of prey. A stone gate that will take your breath away... The Broumovské stěny National Nature Reserve is home to many magical places that are well worth visiting whatever the season.
The walls rise towards the southwest from the valley of the Stěnava River. The landscape consists of a distinctive asymmetrical mountain ridge, from which there rise a number of sandstone rock formations, lining numerous ravines. Much of Broumovské stěny is accessible via a dense network of marked hiking trails, which allow a relatively easy walk through otherwise difficult terrain.

One of the most famous spots is Smith's Gorge, a place wreathed in legend. The marked hiking route from Police nad Metují to Broumov via Hvězda runs through it.

One interesting feature of Broumovské stěny are the many rock ‘mushrooms’ around Slavný and Božanovský Špičák. Those sandstone rock formations are the result of a process known as selective weathering.

Hvězda is an important intersection of hiking trails. It offers a beautiful view of the Broumov Basin and the surrounding Czech and Polish mountains. It is the site of the Baroque Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows, designed by Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer and built in 1723-33. A Swiss-style tourist chalet has stood on this picturesque rocky hill with the chapel since 1856 - a great place for a drink and a bite to eat.

Numerous other viewpoints (e.g. Božanovský Špičák, the Crown, the Vulture's Nest) provide views of the nearby rocky landscape and other surroundings of the Police and Broumov regions, as well as the characteristic ridges of the Giant, Owl, Eagle and Bystřice Mountains and across Poland to the distant Králický Sněžník and Jeseníky Mountains. The south-eastern part of the Walls is most easily accessed from Machov or Božanov. This is the part with Božanovský Špičák (773 m above sea level - Broumovské stěny’s highest peak) with a marked circular trail, the Junácká viewpoint and the Labyrinth.

One unique sandstone formation is the Stone Gate. Visit it while on a trip to the nearby Koruna Hill, which offers one of the most spectacular views.

In the southeast, Broumovské stěny, connects, with a slight gap, to the Polish Table Mountains. The best starting points for hikes around Broumovské stěny are Křinice, Božanov, Machov, Slavný and Hlavňov.
